This recording discusses the many depictions of women in classical Greek mythology and history. Such figures as Helen of Troy are paradoxical imagined characters that are simultaneously harpies and sirens, both persecutor and protector. The dominance of male psyche upon our understanding of Ancient Greek society is explored through the written evidence they have left us. Various Classical Greek plays are mapped according to the gender dynamics that occur; often genitive to their male counterpart they are also a threat. In most cases women occupy the kernel of tragedy.
