EXCLUSIONARY PRACTICES: Mari Carmen de Lara, Isaac Julian, Jackie Jones; Centre for Living Cinema, NYC; 29/4/88

Three speakers address gender, class and race as the dominant cultural references that define exclusion. What agency does the media have in practicing resistance against exclusion? Mari Carmen de Lara discusses the position of third world women. Her documentary We Aren't Asking For The Moon charts the plight of female textile workers after the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City.

Isaac Julian makes films that address the struggles of black second-generation immigrants in Britain, in particular regarding sexuality and identity.

Jackie Jones talks about the critical need for her quarterly magazine Black Film Review. The Washington based publication looks at the representation of black people in mainstream media as well as promoting black filmmakers. These talks are followed by questions from the floor.
