Nancy Spero w/ Jon Bird, Lisa Tickner, Clare Pjaczkowska; ICA, London; 11/3/87

Jon Bird's Curatorial debut at the ICA was the Nancy Spero Retrospective of 1987, which he describes was put together through long discussions with the artist, the institution and the two invited guests; Lisa Tickner and Claire Pjaczkoska.

Spero's drawing and paintings have an ambiguity between dichotomies of tragedy and comedy, high art and low art, maturity and immaturity. This blurring effectively unsettles the canonical maxims of art history. The feminine defined depiction of mythological iconography, acts to redeem the patriarchal condition of history and representation.
