Juliet Mitchell; Darwin Theatre, UCL, London; 10/2/86

Juliet Mitchell is Professor of Psychoanalysis and Gender Studies at University Cambridge, Convenor of Gender Studies and a Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge University. Mitchell was involved in leftwing politics from the beginning of her career, editing the journal New Left Review in the 1960s. She went on to attempt the reconciliation of psychoanalysis and Feminism.

Mitchell poses an interpretation of Freud and Lacan in which 'I' or 'Ego' is a surface of 'It'. Mitchell considers representation and perception through the 'I'. The 'mirror stage' is significant for its role in visual representation as the primary optical moment. Mitchell published a paper entitled 'The Letter I' in Sexual Difference Journal the same year as this lecture.
