THE VISUAL CONSTRUCTION OF DIFFERENCE. Yvonne Rainer; DIA Foundation, NYC; 30/4/88
This seminar discusses the production of alterity, particularly in regard to gender and race. Psychoanalysis presents the impossibility of escaping a definition via difference, so how does society move towards a plurality of differences?
One contributor claims the classification of cultural groups produces terms such as 'Black American Writer', that are not useful for they normalize difference by failing to identify its opposite, the otherwise addressed 'White Male Writer'. Popular media and literature are called upon to exemplify paradigms of colonization and conservative gender identification.
